The First 'Maniac' Trailer is Terrifying

The first full trailer for the Netflix series Maniac has officially dropped–and it is trippy. Based off of a Norwegian television series of the same name, Superbad icons Emma Stone and Jonah Hill star in the Black Mirror meets Inception miniseries as two people selected to undergo a mysterious drug trial. Their characters, suffering from mental illnesses, are told by Justin Theroux's Dr. James K. Mantleray that his miracle pill will "solve the mind" and fix their problems.
“Once you begin to appreciate the structure of the mind, there’s no reason to believe that anything about us can’t be changed," Theroux says.
The trailer finds strangers Stone and Hill meeting over and over again after taking the pill, hopping through multiple dimensions together. From a 1950s-esque party to a 1980s suburban family to a Lord of the Rings alternate reality, the couple appear to be slowly losing their minds while fending off threats in dangerous universes.
Created by Patrick Somerville and directed by Cary Fukunaga, Maniac will premiere on Netflix on September 21. Watch the mind-bending trailer below.
